Orange County, California – Today, Orange County Supervisor Katrina Foley called on the Board of Supervisors to proclaim the month of June as National Gun Violence Awareness Month, which passed with unanimous Board support. Facing an increase in gun violence, both nationally and locally, Orange County recently experienced a hate crime and shooting at the Taiwanese Presbyterian church in Laguna Hills, which left one person dead and many others critically injured. The passing of this proclamation occurred within minutes of the County learning about today’s deadly shooting at a Texas elementary school, which left at least 14 students and one teacher dead, as well as the suspect.
“Since joining the Orange County Board of Supervisors a little more than a year ago, we've witnessed several tragedies including the murder of Aiden Leos from my hometown of Costa Mesa, a shooting that claimed the life of 4 individuals and one child from the City of Orange, and the recent deadly shooting in Laguna Woods that claimed the life of a beloved local physician, Dr. Cheng,” said Supervisor Katrina Foley.
"Firearms are used in 74% of homicides. While we may differ on the best remedy, we must come together and use the month of June to thoughtfully and seriously consider the best way to end the surge in gun violence. Hate and harm through guns needs to stop, and together we can commit to and take this first step.”
